I have a 1999 sunfire gt and my sunroof is stuck in the “vent” position but is not leaking. However it was working prior and doing so just fine. One I went to open it and it opened, I closed it and it wouldn’t go. So while holding the close button I gave it a very little nudge and it closed fully. The next day I opened it again and it worked just fine, I closed it and it wouldn’t close. Being that it is my daily driver I had to get it closed somehow so I am sad to say that I kinda forced it closed while holding the button. And this is how it got stuck in the “vent” position. I just took the headliner off and i saw the motor moving and working just fine. I also saw some tubes and i don’t know what they are for. Maybe cables? Anyhow I just was curious if anyone knew what the problem may be and the fix?

since the motor works theres power. either the cables are bound up
or the motor motor has a problem. I would suggest that you pull the
motor out and check to see if everything is turning. also check that
the sun roof is not crooked in the track

If there are wire cables they may be rusted or snapped. May need replacing.

The cables could be binding as suggested. You may have pushed the window off it’s track when you forced it down. Most of that crap is plastic, and easy to break. The motor itself might have a stripped gear that drives the window, or more likely, the probably plastic gear in the window regulator is stripped. I agree, pull the parts and see what you can see.

It could be binding at the cables or the tracks it’s hard to say without looking at it. Most times sunroofs have a manual override somewhere that you can put a tool in and hand crank it into position, check your owners manual for specifics on that. The tubes are drains so make sure they are free of debris. Once it’s closed I would suggest leaving it that way or you may never be able to close it again otherwise you may need to replace the motor track assembly in order to repair it.
