My wife has just called to say that our 2003 Escape with the 2.0L Zetec engine suffered a complete electrical failure just a few minutes after leaving home. First the radio went off, then all the dash warning lights came on and the car started slowing down.
There’s a recovery service on the way, and I’ll find out what they say in the fullness of time. My first thought, though, is that the alternator is kaput?
EDIT – the recovery truck guy says that the alternator was overcharging the battery, putting out 15V. He gave it a few whacks with a hammer and it’s now charging correctly. He suggested that the brushes might have been getting stuck – so I guess that means a new alternator?
