There are a number of posts out there on the interweb on this topic. Some of them bring up an issue with the input shaft nut loosening and backing off apparently causing enough slop to have 5th gear work its way out. I have been having this problem. While in 5th gear on the freeway, I can feel the shifter push back against my hand when the engine is putting a load on the drive line (ie, i give it gas). When I let up, I can push the shifter foward quite a bit, push on the gas and I can feel it start to push back against my hand. It never pops out of 5th gear when it’s under a load, but just the right amount of load and then no load and it will often just suddenly not be in gear anymore. If I keep pressure against the shifter it will stay in gear and not just suddenly be out of gear. However, sometimes I will go to drive the car and it will be rock solid while in 5th with no play at all and work great. It seems start to get play in it after it’s been driven for a while

So, I pulled my transmission out and apart. The nut wasn’t backed off, but it was loose enough I was able to back it off by hand. Is that nut still most likely the culprit? Is it possible that the nut is working itself tigher and looser giving me the occasional rock solid 5th gear and the more often sloppy 5th gear and if I just crank it back down I’ll fix my problem? It’s a bit of work to get the tranny out and then back in again to find out that isn’t my problem and I just need a new tranny so I’m trying to figure out my best course of action.

I’ve attached a picture of the nut in question.

I have read about this problem with the 5 speed transmissions as well. It’s a great question. On one hand you shouldn’t be able to move the input shaft nut by hand. It def. needs to be torqued down. But is this THE cause of your issue?
I hope a Subie mechanic can chime in on this. Kudos to you on digging in to tackle this.

Sure enough, that nut was the culprit. Cranked it back down, reinstalled and the tranny is rock solid.
