This of this as more of an experiment than anything. Sometimes I do things so you don’t have to. If this adjustment is not done correctly it can damage the differential so proceed with caution should you attempt this adjustment.

I hate it when repair attempts have no effect. I’m in a similar situation with my van… but I’ll save that for a fresh thread.

I don’t really consider this a ‘fail’ so much as an attempt. If you don’t try you’ll never know right?

I enjoyed this video a lot. It felt like real life and you were safe and honest with the viewer. I remembered that other Diff from ETCG1 it must have been squeeling like a banshee.

I said “attempt”… I never said “fail”. If I had said “fail”, then you’d be 100% right.

This was a fun video, if not a not-so-pleasant reminder of a few times I’ve run into a similar situation.

Anyway, if the air hammer was taking off the teeth, I’m not sure how effective this would be… but, the Subaru dealership near me said that you can use one of those oil filter pliers (I have a Walmart special, that’s basically just round with a tooth on either side), to help turn those.

On the other hand, if you can distribute the same amount of force over two teeth instead of one, you’re at least going to be less likely to break it. ๐Ÿ™‚

13:17 lmao that was funny, sorry you couldn’t get that to move, but i’m also glad you posted a video with things going wrong, I think it shows some humility.

This is really a video about special tools and what happens when you try and to without.

I myself have found in a very similar situation many times and just hated the darn thing that wasn’t gonna follow my will ๐Ÿ˜‰

I remember the first time I tried to change oil to my Citroen AX; I had just bought a oil filter wrench which was made with a chain that went around the filter.
When I tried to unscrew it the key first started budging the filter , then it broke under the strain.

So now I had a damaged filter and a broken wrench….grrrrrrr

I ended up not surrendering and drilling through the filter with my electric drill and then made a shower in oil! :silly:

Then after I cleaned up the mess I just stuck a breaker bar into the hole I drilled and was able to unscrew the darn filter and change it!

                      What a victory! ๐Ÿ˜›

But not always one can go home with a victory, and sometimes one feels very very defeated and tired inside…it’s like an act of defiance of the machine , and usually it just starts a challenge which just needs to be won by the human! ๐Ÿ˜›
(at the cost of many wanderings and ramblings in tools shops in search for the right tool for the job  )

So the lesson is, even if the battle is lost, the war is always “winnable” ๐Ÿ˜†

Live long and prosper (and stay dirty!)

I love the being candid and “what can we learn from this” approach.

I ask this question as a guy that has to do repairs and be prepared to leave it on stands until I can get it done, don’t attempt it until I have that time because I need it Monday, if I attempt it I have to succeed because there again I need it Monday. (I need a backup car).

                        Question:
In your experience if you could have let that penetrating oil soak a few days, could that have helped move that side that was seized where maybe the air chipper was a bit on the rough side? (My thought was to try a air chipper too.)
