So on my local Craigslist theres a 2000 Subaru forester 2.5 for sale for 700 the catch is it doesn’t run so I asked what’s wrong with it and this is what he said It is a motor issue, I replaced the starter two weeks before the problem. I had done an oil change and put to much oil in. This caused something to disrupt the timing of the motor. It made lots of noise, I shut the car off and when I went to start the car again it did not turn over. I drained the oil and topped it off again. The car continues to not turn over. I believe it to be a timing issue. Might just need a new belt or it could have just slipped off. I had the motor rebuilt and had the belt replaced that the time as well.

What do you guys think Iv never delt with subaru a before.

In any situation where you are thinking of buying a vehicle with a inoperable engine and the seller either doesn’t know or isn’t saying what is wrong I suggest figuring that it needs a different engine. So, I’d recommend shopping for an engine, either used or rebuilt, whatever your choice is. Add that price to the vehicle and install price to see if the deal still makes sense.

As for Subaru, my guess is that it broke a timing belt and like any interference engine that at least means head work. Depending on the model and engine there may or may not be room to pull the heads with the engine in the car. Most mechanics like the engine out.

I fail to see a link between oil being over full and timing jumping. My theory without hearing it would be he over filled it to the point where the crank was dipping into the oil as it rotated, making air bubbles, causing low oil pressure to proceeds to destroy the engine. Does the engine turn over? Can you rotate the balancer with a wrench? If it does crack does relative compression sound good?
