Hey everyone, so I’m fixing the rocker problem on my 2009 Corolla (1.8L engine), pulled the camshafts out to make it easier. Now to my problem, I was re-seating the valve locks (keepers) and one decided to pop off and fall down the timing chain hole… I really don’t want to pull all of my pulleys off and take the timing chain cover off to pull it out.

To the question, do you think I’d be fine running the engine with such a small part sitting around the timing chain? I’d think there’s enough clearance to be just fine, or possibly it went into the oil pan.. I have no idea. The part is literally 4mm wide, and half circle shaped.

drop the pan and check for it… a new jug of oil is cheaper than a new timing chain or worse a new engine

Only problem is that my car is sitting in my college parking lot. I guess I could get someone to bring me an oil pan..

Trust me, as noted before its easier to drop the pan then to pull the timing cover off… I’ve done a couple of timing cover reseals and if your going to do the timing cover you also have to do the sump and rocker cover as well haha

Yeah I’ll be dropping the pan. Luckily the timing chain area has a direct drain to the sump/oil pan.. I should be okay.

I’d definitely get that thing out of there before you start it up!

I’m with the group. Drop the pan and get it out of there. I’ve seen engines destroyed by just one bolt that got dropped into the wrong place. This is one of those situations where you just have to suck it up or pay the price.

                Keep us posted.

If a magnet on a stick and a borescope couldn’t find it, I would tear it down rather than risking more.
