So Long story short I bought a 2000 Dodge intrepid 2.7 that needed an engine. It had a knock and I got it for a good price. I got another engine out of a wreck that I personally got to test so i purchased it. I changed every gasket on the engine including the head gasket and did everything according to the service manual step by step. so I got it all back together and running great! so the last step is to verify the cooling fans are working before I can button up everything under the hood. well that where the problem comes in. in the service manual it says the fans should come on between 106 and 110 degrees Celsius with the air off. well I ran the car up to 110 degrees yesterday (according to my scanner) and the fans didn’t come on. the gauge in the car was at the half way point at 110 degrees. so the moment it hit 110 degrees Celsius all the coolant blew out of the overflow bottle. it stopped as soon as i turned the car off though, its almost like it wasn’t boiling.so I thought that maybe the temp sensor was bad? because I unplugged it this morning and the fans instantly came on I guess because it get a high signal when its unplugged. so I changed the sensor with another one I had and I ran the car and it got to 54 degrees C and stopped but obviously the engine was hotter than that. So I don’t know what to think if both sensors I have are bad or if the coolant isn’t actually getting hot where the sensor is, bad thermostat? but I know the fans and wiring to them are all good. I haven’t touched the thermostat by the way. any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks. my only other thought is that if the thermostat is sticking when the coolant blew out of the overflow maybe it had popped open since it got so hot, and blew all that air out of the overflow. I am fairly positive i bleed all the air out though.

Here is what I would do:
        1. Replace the thermostat since its not that expensive.
        2. Burp the coolant system (open your coolant system bleeder to let air pockets escape.)
        2. Check fuses
        3. Check the price for a new temp sensor, worst case scenario you can buy it and if no difference then obviously return it. First check the return policy, I know Autozone has somewhat of good warranties and their cheap although some say they are crappy parts but if you want to pay more then go oem.

You may still have air in the cooling system.
Try turning your ac on.both fans should come on.
here is a link for a wiring diagram.

If you had the rad cap off at 110c then of course the coolant is gonna come out. It was boiling. Those things are a Pr%#k to get the air outta them. I use a vacufill tool to get the air out. Sometimes you get lucky but I don’t fool with them anymore.

Don’t know if you have a vacufill tool or maybe you can rent one but you would need shop air to make it work.

I use a spill free funnel and adapters at work for bleeding cooling systems,

I would be checking for power going to the cooling fans. Do you have access to a scan tool with bidirectional controls so you can activate the cooling fans?

Does your car have AC? If so, turn it on and see if the fan spins up. If so you probably have a bad fan relay.

                Hope this helps you out

Sorry I haven’t replied yet everyone, i was out of town over the weekend. so today i changed the thermostat and the coolant sensor and ran it up to 97 degrees C and I ended up shutting it off because it seemed like it was getting so hot. there is no way that it was not past the 106-110 degrees. im just judging the temp by how hot the valve covers and rad hoses are. when its at 97 degrees. i mean its like scalding hot to the touch. even when i turn on the AC, nothing. when i have the heat on its REALLY hot and constant heat not intermittent like there is air in it. I had the bleeder open with a clear hose on it and there wasn’t any air coming out of it. I did check the thermostat before i installed it and it opened and everything. so im stumped at this point I just don’t see why it would be a wiring issue being that its getting a signal from the sensor and if i unplug the sensor both fans come on at full speed, but then of course I get a check engine light. I really appreciate the help, I need to get this car back on the road soon 🙂

HOOOOORAY!!! I fixed the stupid intrepid! So after a week of contemplation and $100 in parts yesterday it ended up being a $6 blown fuse. the worst part it that I checked the fuse previously and it was fine, but I checked it again this morning and sure enough it was blown. anyways thanks for the help everyone!

The fuse blew for a reason. If you don’t find that reason, it will blow again in the future. Fuses don’t just blow, I am guessing there is a short somewhere in the wiring.

You may have a problem with one of the fans going bad.
Glad you found the fuse. 🙂

yay! fuse or relay for the win, although sometimes the fuse and or relay will go bad for a reason, on the other side of the coin sometimes they go bad because they r a hunk of…. anyways happy u got it sorted.

Sorry I haven’t replied yet, I think I blew the fuse when i was jumping the relay terminals to see if the fans would come on. They are still working properly, and no blown fuse. anyways it appears to be running good, and is almost ready to be sold. Thanks again everyone for the help!
