I have a 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe 3.5 AWD… I’m attempting to remove and replace the passenger side axle. I have the hub end out but I’m having trouble removing the transmission end. Does anyone have any experience with this truck, any tips to help get the transmission end out?

      Thanks

      Charlie

As I recall there’s just the standard groove and wire snap ring in the stub of the axle. Sometimes those can be stubborn. You can try rotating the axle as you try popping it. If the splines are damaged it might be frozen. I’ve seen where people will replace everything but the inner stub at the inner boot in a situation like this.

Get two pry and set them 180 degrees apart behind the joint. Pry, rotate the axle, and repeat. If all fails you can try tapping a pickle fork behind it but be careful as you can crack the transmission this way.

I simply take a small chisel, set it vertical between axle hub and differential, and gently tap it up with a hammer. It normally pops axle out after about 2 taps. Make sure you have rag handy to plug the hole, as ATF will trickle out.

Depending on the transmission it may not simply trickle. I emptied the trans on my Grand Caravan when I did the one on it.

I’ve always found it to be like pulling off a band-aid. Stick a prybar in there and give it a good pop. Might be harder on the ground though.
