Vehicle is 2001 Toyota Sienna. Went to torque down water pump bolt with cheap-ass harbor freight torque wrench, which didn’t click when it should (71 ft lbs.) . I’m not sure if it was cross threaded as well, but I can’t unfortunately rule it out.

The bolt came out, but looked a mess. http://imgbox.com/NebkAAyD

What to do now? Am I screwed? Can I try to put another one in, and hope for the best, or am I going to have to do some form of major reconstructive surgery?

        That torque spec is INCH-pounds.

You’re going to need to invest in a helicoil kit. Hope you have an unobstructed path to the hole, orherwise you’ll have to pull the engine.

I meant to say inch pounds. I set it to about 6 foot pounds, but it just kept torquing, and then eventually slipped on the bolt. When I went to unscrew it, it came right out by hand, with a tilt. So I guess it was cross threaded.

Just now I moved one of the bolts from the bottom of the water pump to the hole, and it went in clean, made good thread-contact, didn’t wobble as it went in, and held on tight. I tightened it to basically the point of minimal resistance, and let go. I think I may be in the clear, this time. *wipes sweat*

I have never cross-threaded anything, (almost always go counter-clockwise first, until threads engage, then clockwise from there), but today was a wake-up call to NEVER EVER NOT DO THAT EVER AGAIN. EVER. Quite the scare.

Whew! Glad to hear it was just a scare.
