Stripped axle nut

I’m trying to remove my transaxle to replace my clutch, after several hours of working on removing my axle nut I have managed to strip it. Does anyone have a good method on removing it? My vehicle info is 2003 Pontiac Vibe 1.8L 2WD FWD 5 speed manual. I used PB Blaster and let to soak over night, after several attempts with an impact wrench and using a breaker bar, all it wants to do is strip more. It does not have a cotter pin, it is notched, on 1 side I punch the notch straight and still no success. The other nut I cut half off with a Dermel and it still won’t budge. Is there a way I can leave the axle attached but still remove it from the transmission or am I at the cutting the axle and replacing it stage? Thanks in advance for any responses!!

You need a new nut and it needs to be dimpled. Axles can move in the splines and work the nut loose. BTW, I see the second picture is the engine on a hanger. Looks good. Better than Eric’s seat belt method – sorry Eric. What are those things on top of the grill?

This is a good example of the first law of DIY mechanics. Whenever things aren’t going well, walk away from it for awhile. Good job.

I was able to order 3 new axle nuts and they are currently on the car. But should I notch those also? And what ur looking at is the new and old clutch disk. See the difference on thickness??

Yes for all drive axles. I don’t know what you have on the rear if 2-wheel drive.

It was just in case I damaged something else and I had to replace it again.
Has anyone ever removed the axle without removing the axle nut?
ETCG did at first in the axle/ball joint video… only to remove it on the bench. SO yes, but you’d need a new wheel bearing, steering knuckle, and hub. Not a recommended method obviously… so I’d keep trying to remove the nuts.
