Hey Eric any chance of a video on repairing striped/broken threads, currently have 2 on my rocker gear bolt threads and was reading up about Helicoils and tap and die stuff,

forgive me if it’s been done before.

I’ll second that. It has been done before, but more experience with this is always good. When threads are stripped, it sets the technician back, and that kind of frustration leads to the camera being turned off and work getting done fast to make up time. But that’s exactly the time where there is lots to learn about efficiency and good technique. Of course the other factor is that good technique offers less opportunity to do a stripped thread repair, because the threads are less likely to get stripped in the first place (grin).

That’s a good idea, when I get the time I can tear into that old Civic block that’s still sitting on the shop floor.

+1 Also. This can help alot of people with the northstar engine, and he 4cyl 2AZ-FE engine which are notorious for stripped head bolts (not the bolt itself, but the thread in the block strips).

On the Northstar. There is a Canadian company making a kit that appeals to me for making permanent repairs. The kit calls for drilling and taping all the headbolt holes then installing stud bolts. The head is then installed over the studs and torqued down with nuts much like an exhaust manifold. I haven’t bit yet but have been looking for a good low mileage Cadillac with only the head gasket problem. The kit is about $600.00 US, is model specific and includes the Shortstar used in the Oldsmobile.

A similar process could be used for stripped bolt holes in general.

Yea there are a lot of kits like the nsl300 (i think that’s what its called?) Or the most popular and preferred method using timeserts. If you look around the internet, you can find them for about $400-$500 a kit.

The Northstar is an issue in and of itself and removing or dealing with stripped fasteners really doesn’t apply there as that process is specific to that engine. The problem with those engines is that the head bolts pull the threads right out of the block and you need to repair the threads in order to do a complete repair. I have heard of the stud kits and I hear they do work well, otherwise get the thread repair kits from the dealer because just a regular thread repair kit isn’t enough as you need more threads than what normally comes in those kits. That job is a nightmare and is one of the few jobs that I’m not in any hurry to do again anytime soon.
