      Hello forum!

Since it started getting cold out my car has been making this strange whooshing noise as I back out of my garage, I have to maneuver around another car in the driveway and it only happens when I turn the steering wheel, as it does this 2-3 times, the instant I hear the noise my brakes become less efficient at holding the car in reverse for a split second then it’s fine again, once I get going forward everything is normal, no whooshing sound when turning the wheel and brakes hold the car in drive just fine and also after I’ve been driving for a while and I want to reverse it does not do this. To be more specific imagine the sound a blow off valve makes on a car with forced induction just not that loud.

I’ve spoken with some friends who work on cars and asked the auto parts store guys but I’ve gotten a wide range of answers from brake booster check valve, a vacuum leak that’s gotten worse, failing power steering pump, transmission might be going out etc…

Recent service: topped off moderately low power steering fluid reservoir, brand new OEM brake master cylinder, and new vacuum line from brake booster to intake manifold (sound existed before and after these were replaced)

      Vehicle info:
      90 Acura Integra, Automatic, 174k

The 90 integra does have power assisted brakes.
          No PS leak

If anyone else might have an idea on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

I have no idea why but the issue is only noticable at cold start/during cold weather, probably due to the contracting of materials but can’t say for sure.

Where is the noise coming from exactly?

If you can’t pinpoint it, get a helper to listen. Leave the hood up as you back out if that helps. It might be a good idea to make sure the driveway is clear and pretend that the other car is there.

I’ll tell you a story of my 67 Mustang with power disc brakes that was driving me nuts.

At low speeds, when applying the brakes, they would lock up, but only going forward. I systematically changed everything, and I do mean everything in the braking system, including the soft and hard lines but it kept happening. So, fast forward to the fix. I was under the dash looking for anything that could be the culprit when I moved the brake pedal and the rod that goes into the brake booster just fell off. Part of that rod that was inside of the brake booster cracked into two pieces! Mind you, this was a new rebuilt booster. The fix was another rebuilt booster.

It’s those little things that drive you nuts. Good luck.
