No
November 27, 2012 at 2:12 am #480373
No
the ignition is on the dash and does not have a “lock” setting i thought only cars that have locking wheels have ignitions on the column
November 27, 2012 at 3:26 am #480414No. They all have a locking column. It’s a regulation instituted by the SAE. I think it was implemented sometime in the 50’s. Some old beetles did not have it but I think that is because they fell into a category other than “passenger vehicle” even though VolksWagon basically means “people hauler”. Besides, my girlfriends aunt has the same car, same year, and it locks.
November 27, 2012 at 5:54 am #480465Yup my aunts impala has one, I’m 6’4 so I lock it almost every time I get out of it cause my legs turn the steering wheel as I get out.
November 27, 2012 at 8:03 am #480494no guys sorry to disappoint you but not all cars have locking steering wheels, not sure on the impala but ill look into it.
November 27, 2012 at 10:07 am #480534mine dont lock no matter how much i turn the wheel maybe cuz its a LS model with car alarm?
November 27, 2012 at 10:17 am #480538My truck’s steering wheel doesn’t lock. Also, any car with a complete passive keyless entry + push button start system, where you can drive without the key in the ignition will not have a steering or shifter lock to facilitate that feature.
November 27, 2012 at 10:24 am #480540well i do not have a push button start it does have shifter lock but it has no chip key so im not sure about the PassKey system. it does have car alarm remote keyless entry and remote truck release though oddly the release button in the car or the key fob is the only way to open the trunk the key will not turn when inserted into the trunk
November 28, 2012 at 6:36 am #480832FMVSS-114 (1973) requires that vehicles be equipped with a locking device that impedes the rotation of the steering wheel and movement of shifting mechanisms.

what page is that on about the rotation of the steering wheel. I can find it
November 28, 2012 at 10:47 am #480890It should be in that PDF file I posted. I looked through a bunch of crap for that stuff and I didn’t save any of it.
November 28, 2012 at 10:48 am #480892If you google the FMVSS 114 you should eventually find it
November 28, 2012 at 11:00 am #480899I went through that whole pdf file and couldn’t find anything on steering wheels. GM service info says the locking wheels are available on some models. I’ve had customers ask me about the locking steering wheel and i know that some vehicles don’t come with it.
November 28, 2012 at 12:03 pm #480905The wording was “or” steering column “or” both (meaning locking gear shift for automatics). It wasn’t a blanket requirement. Many do both, others just lock the gear select. Manual transmissions obviously require the steering lock.
Each vehicle must have a starting system which, whenever the key is removed from the starting system prevents:
– The normal activation of the vehicle’s engine or motor; and
– Either steering, or forward self-mobility, of the vehicle, or bothEvery few years that thing gets amended. Think it just got another last year that’s effective for 2015 or some such. Both good and bad. TPMS, serious fail. Normally about as helpful as the old lady that points out you have mud on your shirt just after you slipped and fell.
November 28, 2012 at 11:07 pm #480976Well I skimmed over several different things that all seemed to read slightly different. Just goes to show you: watch how much you trust the internet. But I digress, bottom line is that specific car is supposed to have a steering lock. I am familiar with that model and specific year.
