2003 Hyundai Santa Fe 3.5 liter AWD..I’ll try and be succinct. Had an issue with my power steering pump needing replacement. To gain access to top mounting nut, I removed the top plenum, and after repair reconnected everything. Car will not start since this repair. I initially thought it was the fuel pump, cause after I turned the ignition to the on position, I didn’t hear the 2-3 sec whine from the pump; and after checking that the truck had spark and voltage to the coils I figured I was right. I accessed the pump, double checked to see if there was voltage at the pump connector (there was) and assumed it was the issue. Replaced the pump with Hyundai OEM pump…not the issue. What happens is the truck starts and stalls immediately..if I hold the gas pedal down alittle it will run, rough and backfiring, but will run. I also checked the fuse relay with a test light, and replaced it with a known good relay, and no change. It seems to me to be a fuel delivery issue, but I’m stumped. I have spark, so not the crank sensor..I checked the volts and continuity of the crank sensor and cam sensor, and all is good. The fuel pressure regulator is new, I replaced it with the pump, just because. I don’t want to throw more parts at this, thats why I’m asking for assistance. The battery is charged, and I checked every fuse….no issues there…I also checked the inertia switch, and that is not the problem. Does anyone have any ideas?? Please help!!

Sometimes cleaning throttle bodies can actually cause problems instead of fixing them. When I was taking about checking for vacuum leaks I wasn’t talking about the vacuum lines but rather the gaskets where components come together and since you had it off 3 times I would STRONGLY suggest checking for these leaks.

Thanks Eric, I’ll give it a look… Strange I’m getting some other codes p2122, p2127 and p0113 would the acceleration position sensor have anything to do with my start then stall??

Did you try the re-initialization yet? Just flip to on(IGN/Run) for under a second then back to off, and wait 20 seconds. It’s very likely it’s not just this simple unless you changed something out as it lists, but it’ll cost you 2 minutes and no money.

Are you 100% sure you got the wires set right?????
              Iv got a 93 ford f150. Between 90 and 94 there wear 3 different styles of wring….
Whats even more weird is in 93 trucks made before 06-22-92 and trucks made after that had 2 different styles

I really doubt you have jumped time…

Could the car be throwing its self into limp mode????
Are you back firing threw the tail pipe???
Are you back firing backwards threw the plenum?
Are you sure its a BACK FIRE???
If the plenum did not seat properly you basically have a internal vacuum leak and that could cause some issues.
You did not over tight the plenum and crack it did you???
Are you smoking black or any other color out of the tail pipe???
Double check all plugs and hoses one more time…

In my mind you have – The firing order wrong the engine or you have something unplugged or plugged wrong.

              I hope Iv helped.Thanks.

Ps. You might try resetting the ECM/PCM/Computer.
Disconnect the battery for 15 mins and Reconnect and try again.

Thanks for all the replies guys!!… I never touched any plugs or wires when I initially took the plenum off… I just checked the front 3 plugs during my diagnosis to check their condition… I had the battery disconnected a few times and I have tried that initialization procedure, turning it on for a sec and off etc, countless times… The one code I checked said it was in limp home mode…there are only two gaskets that would affect the idle and they have been checked… I actually had a mechanic friend here with 30 years experience and he couldn’t figure it out… Said that it sounds like the throttle body area or the timing… This throttle is drive by wire and electronic and I know are prone to issues, but a new one costs $700 and a junk yard one about $200…I’ll see about getting a video of the start stall and posting it here to give you a better listen…so confused!!!

If it’s DBW then it may need to be reset and that’s something only the dealer can do.

That whining sound when you rev it doesn’t sound good…

That’s the new power steering pump I put in that precipitated all this… I haven’t been able to get the truck running to bleed it out yet…

Wish I had better ones, but with all the codes pointing at the intake, have you tried the vac leak testing yet? Perhaps, yanking the MAF and cleaning it out(with MAF cleaner)?

Otherwise, datalogging is my only other suggestion. Just to see if it’s getting/doing everything it otherwise should. That doesn’t yield anything, yeah, I’d probably take it to a dealer that you trust (slightly) to see if they can either reset it, or just tell you what the issue is.

I cleaned the MAF sensor with the cleaner… Gonna do what you and Eric suggest, and focus on vac leak… Checked timing again and it’s dead on… Must be a vac leak…

I see more problems with vacuum leaks than you can shake a stick at. I think it’s worth looking into.

I just wanted to update everyone…Eric was right…after all that I checked, it turns out that it was a vacuum leak…I inadvertently left a split washer on one of the 2 studs, and put the intake plenum on top of that, causing the leak, and no start… Eric was right…Thanks to all!!!
                                  Happy Thanksgiving!!
