2003 Hyundai Santa Fe 3.5 liter AWD..I’ll try and be succinct. Had an issue with my power steering pump needing replacement. To gain access to top mounting nut, I removed the top plenum, and after repair reconnected everything. Car will not start since this repair. I initially thought it was the fuel pump, cause after I turned the ignition to the on position, I didn’t hear the 2-3 sec whine from the pump; and after checking that the truck had spark and voltage to the coils I figured I was right. I accessed the pump, double checked to see if there was voltage at the pump connector (there was) and assumed it was the issue. Replaced the pump with Hyundai OEM pump…not the issue. What happens is the truck starts and stalls immediately..if I hold the gas pedal down alittle it will run, rough and backfiring, but will run. I also checked the fuse relay with a test light, and replaced it with a known good relay, and no change. It seems to me to be a fuel delivery issue, but I’m stumped. I have spark, so not the crank sensor..I checked the volts and continuity of the crank sensor and cam sensor, and all is good. The fuel pressure regulator is new, I replaced it with the pump, just because. I don’t want to throw more parts at this, thats why I’m asking for assistance. The battery is charged, and I checked every fuse….no issues there…I also checked the inertia switch, and that is not the problem. Does anyone have any ideas?? Please help!!

Ohm’ing cam and crank sensors is not really a valid test. You need to use a lab scope for them.

When the vehicle stalls, does it restart right away or just crank over?

The truck never starts up and runs…just cranks as long as I turn the key…

Then, if the vehicle is cranking but a no start, you have to be missing spark and/or fuel.

                Find out which is missing.

He said he has spark and fuel. If he holds down the accelerator pedal while cranking, it starts and runs very rough presumably until he removes throttle at which point it dies.

Yes… I have spark and fuel…it starts then stalls… If I keep my foot on the gas it will run, but rough…sorry if I didn’t explain it right dreamer2355…

Did you torque down your intake manifold bolts after re installation?

If your issues started after your power steering pump replacement and removing your intake manifold, i would recommend back tracking through your work.

You may have a severe vacuum leak.

I have taken off the plenum 3x since replacing the power steering pump… No leaks…. It’s baffling to me… I have been tinkering with cars for 25 years… This has never happened to me before…

I know you said the timing is hard to access on this engine but at this point I think it’s worth the work to check and see if it jumped a tooth. It seems that you’ve explored every other possible cause.

Your right…I don’t know what else it could be!

Honestly I can’t think of anything else it could be, that would be cheaper or easier to fix. If the timing is ok, then I would have to think that either the computer or the cam itself is damaged.

Sometime this week I’ll check the timing belt and get back to you guys!!
