2003 Hyundai Santa Fe 3.5 liter AWD..I’ll try and be succinct. Had an issue with my power steering pump needing replacement. To gain access to top mounting nut, I removed the top plenum, and after repair reconnected everything. Car will not start since this repair. I initially thought it was the fuel pump, cause after I turned the ignition to the on position, I didn’t hear the 2-3 sec whine from the pump; and after checking that the truck had spark and voltage to the coils I figured I was right. I accessed the pump, double checked to see if there was voltage at the pump connector (there was) and assumed it was the issue. Replaced the pump with Hyundai OEM pump…not the issue. What happens is the truck starts and stalls immediately..if I hold the gas pedal down alittle it will run, rough and backfiring, but will run. I also checked the fuse relay with a test light, and replaced it with a known good relay, and no change. It seems to me to be a fuel delivery issue, but I’m stumped. I have spark, so not the crank sensor..I checked the volts and continuity of the crank sensor and cam sensor, and all is good. The fuel pressure regulator is new, I replaced it with the pump, just because. I don’t want to throw more parts at this, thats why I’m asking for assistance. The battery is charged, and I checked every fuse….no issues there…I also checked the inertia switch, and that is not the problem. Does anyone have any ideas?? Please help!!

You’ve obviously got lots of experience and you went through the usual suspects. I’m wondering if it’s a vehicle security issue. I would try to find a manual for the vehicle and I would put a gauge on the fuel rail and see if you have fuel pressure there when you turn the ignition key on.

If its running rough and backfiring when you force it to run by giving it gas, it could be out of time. If it was a security issue I doubt it would run under any conditions.

I had the timing belt replaced at the dealer about 6 months ago… Might be something to look at! The truck doesn’t have a security system… Please anyone else with a suggestion???

When the plenum was removed.where new gaskets used?
sounds like your out of timing.check mechanical timing.

I changed the gasket about a year ago when I changed the spark plugs…so its fairly new..If it was out of time, wouldn’t the engine have been destroyed cause this is an interfernce engine?? I’ll have to check the timing now…so annoying to do on this truck!!

My cousin has the same motor with the same issue and we can not figure it out either. We just replaced the cylinder head on the rear and all the timing parts etc… now the pile wont stay running. We have tried everything to no avail so good luck. I think our next step is tannerite.

I’m so done with this engine…I’m about to go outside and double check the fuel pressure one more time before I check for compression…if thats good, I’ll see if the timing belt jumped time…if thats the case R.I.P Santa fe 3.5!! Good luck to you!!

Did you pull any spark plug wires? Maybe one could be mixed?

I checked the plug wires…I just checked compression and its good on all cylinders…maybe the belt jumped time…what a pain…!!

The timing could be a tooth off. does this vehicle have
a distributor and was it removed?

this truck has coil over spark plugs… I never touched the timing belt…but everything I have checked and done thus far seems to point to a jumped timing belt…it starts and then stalls…new fuel pump…fuel relay is good…engine has spark and fuel…checked the voltage and continuity of the cam and crank sensors they are good….and all fuses are good….what about a bad ECM…could this be the problem??? checked compression on the front 3 plugs and they are all very good…I’m perplexed!!

I think it’s time to physically check the timing belt.

Have you tried scanning for pending codes?

You could also try resetting the ecu by disconnecting the battery for a while.

I had the battery disconnected and it still doesn’t start.., no codes stored in computer!
