I bumped into the Director of Career services of my old auto tech school (Lincoln Tech) in the store the other day. I graduated from the school about 15 years ago, but she still remembered me. Anyway, we started talking about the school and how she spends all her time trying to place new graduates mostly into dealerships. So she tells me that new graduates can expect to make $10/hr at most dealerships. Seriously? There’s something very wrong with paying new guys so poorly in a skilled trade. Keep in mind that I live in the NY metro area. Salaries in general are higher here that most parts of the country.

Why is it that it’s okay to pay new technicians so poorly? This is one of the reasons why so many kids today don’t want to get into the industry. By comparison, you’d never see an apprentice electrician, for example, starting out at just $10/hour, at least not around here.

Can the overhead be so high that they have to pay 1990’s wages. I feel bad for the young guys. I try to help the new guys out with training but I’m flat rate so I got to run fast or die. Not like when I started and people could take the time to help you out. I just hope this is as low as it goes right now and things turn around in the industry.

No offence to plumbers when since the beginning of time, shit rolls down hill, pay day is thursday, and dont lick your fingers, then electricians that black wire goes here and white goes there. And both respectable trades only have a tool box you can carry. Mechanics have a calling, sure as hell we don’t do it for the money.

Wow that’s low, and at flat rate that’s highway robbery, especially when someone is trying to learn. Minimum wage here is $10.25/hr. I think people start at $12 hourly at the dealer I work at. I got into the trade 8 years ago, did the GM ASEP program which is 4 levels here. Started at $10/hourly until after level 2, went to $15/hourly, after level 3 went to $18 hourly then once I got my certification I went to $21 flat rate for a couple years, now at $24 flat rate.
