I fixed the problem before by purchasing a new ignition switch and it solved it for around 2 months. It’s back to the same thing now.
Hello, for around a year or so I’ve had a starting issue with my 1991 mazda b2200 FI 2.2. When I turn the key sometimes I hear a single click per time I turn the key. Sometimes it starts right up without making the single click. It doesn’t matter what gear I’m in or whether the engine is hot or cold. It is totally random clicking. Sometimes I’ll have to turn the key 10+ times before it starts. I’ve checked the ground for the starter, replaced the starter and solenoid, and rewired the wires that go to the starter. Also, when it does click you can hear the starter motor working if you continue to keep the key in the starting position. Well, I believe it’s the starter motor working. The starter and solenoid is good, tested at autozone many times and passes easily. I’m not quite sure what the problem could be. If any of you have any idea please let me hear it. Thanks!

If you repaired all starters, then it may be an engine defect or battery. Check your engine by a mechanic. Because sometimes there are some internal engine problems occurs. Last week I also had some starting problem of my car, so I called a car mechanic from our local auto repair shop by tiremania.net site and he found that my car battery was dead. So I replaced my car battery and after that my car is showing no problems still today.
Thanks for this though I’ve been through 2 batteries too. Same exact thing. We’ve changed every gasket/seal in the engine as well as inspected main internal parts and no luck with that.
It sounds like a bad starter to me. As a matter of fact, that is exactly what both my Accord, and Caravan sounded like when the contacts in the solenoid failed.
The clicking sound to me is the solenoid engaging. Once that happens, the only reasons a starter would not run are:
Not enough current from the battery
bad starter motor
bad contacts in the solenoid
some physical obstruction to the starter turning, such as improper mounting preventing it from properly engaging with the fly wheel.Double, and triple check your connections to be certain they are tight, and clean.
I agree, it sounds like a starter. Let’s just say that not all reman starters are created equal. Some are better than others. If you were ‘price shopping’ when you purchased it, that might have something to do with it. That said, you should also check the battery AND it’s connections. Poor connections can also cause that symptom, as well as a faulty battery. Same story with the battery, cheaper is not better. More info here.

Today I checked all grounds and they’re good. Checked it on the block, starter and positive on battery. All read 12.81 volts. I then followed a Black green wire that went from the solenoid to the neutral safety switch. So we jumped the neutral safety switch and then tried to start it and it started every time without issues. So we’re thinking that could possibly be it, though sometimes it does start every time no problem. If that sounds like it could be the culprit that would be nice to know before I purchase the part.
