HI guys im 20 years old and a husband/father. I recently have found a passion for working vehicles. Mainly due to having to always fix them up for them to even work. I currently work overnights and my wife works days. I have started really thinking about getting a career in mechanics. I love cars and always have. My only thing is i have no clue where to start. I can do simple maintenance and change out parts like starter’s alternators and the usual fix on cars over 100k miles. but that’s about it. Does anyone have any Idea where to begin? Should i go to a votech school or just start off working somewhere like tire kingdom or try to find an apprenticeship somewhere if it still exist? any help would be very greatful. Thank you.

Tech school is the best bet. banana: You will learn the theory and operation on how and engine works. You learn a few tricks form experience instructors. Overall its going get you ready to join the field, then going in unprepared. Next step is to decide your going to learn auto or diesel. Make sure there NATEF certified.

I am 30 and after working in a retail enviroment for 9 years i have decided to have a career change. Because my dad is a mechanic i have been around this stuff since i was young. I too like working on cars and have a pretty good knowledge for the basic. I decided im gonna be a mechanic and have started the mechanic program at a local college. I think it is better to go to school and learn from people who want to pass their knowledge over. Its s possible to be a good mechanic from on the job training but i dont think youll gain as much trick and tricks and specific details on how stuff works like DonPedro said. With that it would be better to go to school.
