I recently turned 16 and am looking for a good starter vehicle and was wondering is there any suggestions out there as to what to get first I.E. Jeep, truck, car, etc, or to start with manual or automatic transmission.

Toyota, Subaru, Honda, in that order too! I would recommend you start with a automatic transmission unless you have been around stick shift vehicles before. Nothing wrong with manual transmissions, just less to distract a new driver with an automatic…

my dad drove a standard Jeep Cherokee my whole childhood which is why I want one but my mom seems set no standard though I don’t understand her problem with it, almost everyone in my family can drive stick and so will I at some point

You really ought to learn to drive a manual transmission. My son learned to drive on a manual, passed his driving test on a manual and that’s all he’s ever driven.

If you really want to learn how to fix vehicles, I recommend a Jeep. If you just want to drive the thing, Honda or Toyota.

do you have someone that will help you work on the vehicle if it breaks?

If you don’t have someone to help you with automotive problems I would lean more heavily towards something more reliable with less maintenance. If you have someone around who knows how to fix something if it breaks then you can expand your range a little. Learning how to fix your own car without any tools or someone around to help you along can end up being pretty expensive for you.

I think if you indicate what your dollar budget is for the car you may get some more specific suggestions. Otherwise it is a “how long is s piece of string” type query..

If you have the bucks for a new car then there are a lot of good choices out there.

So how much are you willing to spend?

10 year old Toyota Corolla with a manual. For the most part, that car will do everything you need it to. If you get snow, get winter tires. Those cars are light enough to where they can still get around really well in snow with winter tires. Plus, they’re still simple enough to work on if something goes wrong. You could get away with a 10 year old Focus or Civic and have similar results.

                    I can’t recommend a 10 year old VW; actually, I can’t even recommend a brand new VW.
