Starter replacement 1996 GMC 3500 7.4

:unsure: I am getting ready to replace the starter on my 1996 GMC 3500 with the 7.4L (454). I have done starters before but that was 30 years ago. Before I get into it on this one has anyone done this before and if so what advice do you have?

Removing the starter on that truck shouldn’t be too bad. I prefer to disconnect the wires going to starter first (after disconnecting the negative terminal on the battery of course). Also, before starting the procedure, I ask myself these questions: Are the starter bolts hard to reach? Are there any things in my way (like an exhaust manifold)? If I get the starter unbolted, will there be enough room to get it out? If everything checks out, I get started! 😆

Edit: also make sure to take good note of what wires went where on the starter. (perhaps you could take pictures or make labels)

Thank you for the help. It went off without a hitch! No more banging on the starter with a hammer to get it started! Starters are a lot smaller than they were 30+ years ago!
