I have a 94 chevy s10 pick up it has a 4.3 standard 4×4. The starter went bad so I replaced it with a new one and now when I try to start it it trys to turn over but it cranks real slow and wont start. Ive checked the battery its good has good voltage and cca is good the alt is good as well. I replaced the pos cable to the starter the grounds are all clean and tight. I thought the issue might be with the ignition so I jump a wire to the solenoid to try to turn it over and its still drags.i took the belt off and spun the harmonic balancer with a large ratchet and it spun ok im not sure what else it could be. Any help is appreciated

Being a 94′ you qualify for the following:

        • Check battery voltage. (12.6 V is optimum)
        • Load test the battery.
        • perform a starter amperage draw test.
        • perform a voltage drop test of both the insulated and ground side of the starter circuit. be sure to also VD the battery terminals. The maximum allowable drop is 100mV per ASE standard. If you see anything above .1 Volts (100mV) you have unwanted resistance in the circuit; the problem must be addressed.

If you want quick and easy I’d suggest pulling the starter and taking some place that claims to repair starters and alternators and have it tested there. If it flunks, take it back to where you got it for warranty. If not, you then can start with electrical testing in the vehicle.

I would think that taking a few quick simple measurements would be easier than wrenching off a starter that “might” be the problem.

True, if the owner understands electricity and meters. Some people don’t. So, just offering an alternative here that might get him going. New starter usually means a reman.
