Hello everybody, I am hoping someone may be able to give me some insight on how to fix this very annoying issue. I am working on a 1998 Corolla, I am changing a starter. While removing the battery connector, the nut would not thread all the way down. After a lot of question mark moments of what exactly was going on I discovered the screw part is also moving. I now cant get the nut to thread down. My idea is to drill the screw out but I am concerned that it will make it not acceptable for the core back. I am not a mechanic at a shop or have access to many special equipment. My main hand, the right is broken, so I cant do a lot of fancy maneuvering . Does anyone have any insight on a way I can take care of this issue without having to do a lot of special stuff. In basic something simple and easy and if possible keeping it so it is still usable for core return. Thank you in advance for any assistants! Stay in peace my friend. Peace!

Can the screw be held with needle nose pliers why you back off
        the nut?

With the amount of room I don’t think that would be possible. Thank you tho!

OP, I am not sure what you mean by “thread down”. Sorry. You can not remove the nut, or bolt, or you can not install it back? I am presuming you have an “ear” on starter, that has a “bolt through” negative cable connector, and then nut is stuck on the through bolt, both moving?
Things that DO work in this situation is vice grip and good socket wrench with snug fitting socket. Vice grip for bolt head back up. Needle nose pliers will simply not hold, you must have something that wraps around the bolt head. Vice grip or channel locks, but considering one hand weak, channel locks are out of question. Vice grip locks on head by itself.
Otherwise you need 2 socket wrenches or a box wrench and socket wrench. Do NOT use open end spanner on bolt, it WILL strip the bolt head and then you have to cut the bolt.

What I understand from your post is that you have not been able to remove the starter because you can’t disconnect the positive feed wire.
One Idea I have is that if you have enough play in the wire cut it as close to the starter as you can and remove the starter. O Then put a new end on the wire when you install the new starter which won’t have a loose stud. If its too short it would still probably be easier on you with the broken hand to cut the wire to remove the starter and get a new one. If there is enough room maybe even just disconnecting the wire at the battery and removing the whole wire with the starter.

Cutting cable is not a bad idea. As the last resort. As then you have to splice or bolt on substitute for the cut piece ( I do not even want to go into what it takes to replace entire cable) and that connection is destined to go bad due galvanic currents at the junction of cables. It WILL happen.

Hello everyone! Thank you for the ideas 🙂 I was able to get the starter pulled down enough to get in with a nut spliter which did as its named and split the nut. Again thank your for your time and thoughts! Stay in peace my friends!
