Starter?

This isn’t so much for a repair (since the starter was recently placed in a 01 sunfire), but would a new starter be somehow connected to a smoother acceleration?

On the old starter (original one), the acceleration was a little rough (esp. between 3rd and 4th gear) and seemed to accelerate slower than usual. Since the new starter was put it, all of those problems have disappeared. I’m just puzzled as far as what the starter would have had to do with either of those. Any ideas?

once the starter engages to start the car.then disengages.
the starters job is then done. That should have nothing to
        do with performance.

That was my train of thought too, which is why I was confused. The performance has been consistently good since it was replaced, not even a sputter so far. Thanks!

Did ya yank the negative (or positive) battery terminal when doing this repair? This will reset the volatile memory keeping the LOAD @ RPM information stored for LTFT tables in the ECU/PCM. That could account for it.

Likely get a bit less in fuel economy if you were looking very closely at it as a comparison, but often this will have the effect you state.

I have a couple of theories here and they kinda go with Wayne613’s idea. If you have low voltage in the system due to corrosion on the battery terminals or at the cables leading to the starter this can cause the ignition system not to work as well. A weaker spark will give you less power than a good spark. Also, the fuel injectors won’t be able to fire as well with low voltage. The fuel pump gets less juice and on and on. Never underestimate system voltage when it comes to vehicle performance. Especially on a modern vehicle that uses a lot of electronics.
