Squeal problems on Bronco

I’ve had a bad squeal for a while now. Its been squealing nonstop after my alternator went out. I thought it was a bad alternator and took it back but they tested it and was working fine and didnt squeak on them. Pulley on smog pump seemed like bearings were out so I replaced pump but still squeaks.

So I changed the tensioner assembly including the pulley. Still no fix. Took off fan and sprayed wd40 on water pump bearings and seemed like it went away but came back with a vengeance about a week later. So I replaced it but I still hear something squeaking!

I’m out of ideas and I can’t keep spitting money at this thing. Could it be an internal engine squeak? Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks.

Ps. Does seem like everytime I remove any pulley even just removing serpentine belt stops squeak for about a day.

Have you replaced the belt itself?

Not yet. Last time I replaced it was about 2010. I replaced belt and had a bad crankshaft pulley at that time. Might have to take a closer look at it.

I guess I overlooked it because I bought for cheap and have had number of issues that I didnt think it would be something that easy. Might give it try tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion.

SOB! You might have hit the nail on the head. Installed new belt yesterday..this is day and a half with no squeak whatsoever! Will report back in a couple days just to double check. Thanks chevyman.

Have not heard the squeak anymore. Did notice the old belt was quite stretched out compared to the new one. Some of those parts I changed I do believe were bad also. So I really don’t mind having spent that money. Like stated before this bronco needed quite a bit of work.

Ya belts will glaze, stretch or crack over time. The belt slippage(which was causing the squeaking) in your case was due to a belt that didn’t have proper tension due to being aged and stretched.

yeah Fords are terrible about belt squeak, I know from a lot of personal experience, I’ve learned that Fords are very particular in what belt you get. I recently had a belt squeak on my 94 F-150. I bought the lower grade belt and it worked for a solid week and it started to squeak again. couldn’t figure it out but later I bought the high grade belt and it was noticeably thicker and put it on and it was gone! still have the old belt though in the toolbox in case of an emergency. you never know B)

One thing to look for in the future is how far down the tensioner arm is in its travel. As belts wear and stretch the arm goes farther down. Newer belts are being made of a different type of material that doesn’t crack, but the belt grooves still end up bottoming in the pulley and allowing squeal or slippage.

I have found that serpentine belts and tensioners seem to wear at the same rate, so when I have to change them I change them as a pair. Also I only use the Gates belts and tensioners. Have eliminated comebacks by doing so. The cheap belts always managed to come back to bite me later. If you check out the Gates website they have some pretty cool info out there on this. Even have a smartphone app that can tell you if a belt needs replacing by taking a pic of it. Don’t ask me how it works, but at the last shop I worked at my foreman put it on his phone and we experimented with it. Was surprisingly accurate. Gates site also will give you all PN#s for any product they make for a vehicle and you can look it up by application. They also will tell you if a motor is interference or freewheeling. All that info is free.

My Bronco used to sound like a bunch of hungry birds until I threw a new belt and tensioner at it, and like you I am now on to everything else that needs to get fixed on it.
