This has been an issue with my 1995 Monte Carlo Z34 since I got it a couple months ago. When I cold start it will fire up normally at about 2k rpm, then after ~5 seconds it will start to drop down to 1k then it bounces back to 2k (each cycle takes about 3-4 seconds), rinse and repeat for at least 1 minute or until I put it into drive (auto tranny). Also I noticed that if I give it gas during this time the RPM will jump up and not come down for at least a full second after letting off the throttle. It only seems to do this when in park, as soon as I put it in drive it seems to settle at 1k rpm.
And finally, to add even more variables, it doesn’t happen on every cold start. sometimes it sits for 8+ hours and starts fine, haven’t noticed any pattern though.
My only concern is that there could be some significant issue waiting to blow up in my face, other than that it doesn’t bother me and hasn’t been an issue.
