1997 Honda Accord LX 2.2L 4cyl Engine (156k miles, runs fine)

For a few days my speedometer was going on the fritz, it would trickle up and down and have a hard time staying in one spot and then sometimes it would just stop completely (go back down to 0) Then the other day on the way home it full circled on me and now it sits at the bottom of the meter and just bounces around and sits under the stop at 0. Anyone got any ideas??

Might be a good time to replace the lamp.

There is a gear in the transmission that runs the speedometer that might be striped so it only catches occasionally. My neighbor had the same problem with his 1989 Ford F.250 until we replaced the transfer case.

Go to Advance Auto parts or AutoZone and they will scan your code with a scanner for no charge. If you have a CEL or transmission code for a faulty VSS, you may have a problem with your VSS or the wiring going to the VSS.
I checked with AutoZone, they told me no autozone does free scans anymore, you have to find the code and they will tell you what it means.
The problem with that is my check engine light is burned out.
Even if its burnt out it will still give you a code, if its OBD II that is.

Yea and to get the code i need an OBDII scanner, i’ve been looking at some.

Have you ever seen a faulty alternator being related to a speedometer jumping erratically while the car is in park on a ’95 Accord?

I also had a VSS failure on my 97 prelude SH. What I learned, and I completely agree with Eric, that those cars had problems with that sensor. While the sensor was acting up I noticed that cruise control would not operate, and VTEC would not engage. After a quick check, a corroded terminal was the cause, and one on the prongs broke off inside the connector. 2 bolts and a new sensor sent me on my way after about 15 minutes.

Alright guys, what I found on this ’95 Accord VTEC was a bad (Dorman aftermarket) VSS that didn’t pass my analog meter sweep test, a faulty alternator voltage regular and a parasitic draw that was draining the battery. All is good to go now.banana:
