Speed sensor

I have a 2000 Honda Civic SI, I recently put in a 98+ JDM Honda Integra Type R engine. I’m still using the original USDM B16 transmission. After the swap, my spedometer has quit working. I think there may be an issue with the VSS. Due to the fact that the spedometer was functioning properly before the swap and I am using the same speed sensor, I’m wondering if I need to replace the speed sensor? Could it be possible that the sensor from a USDM B16 transmission is not compatible with a JDM B18 motor? What are my options here?

considering the VSS send inputs to the ECM, this is likely why the speedo is not working. you may need to use the sensor from the vehicle that the motor cam from in order for it to communicate properly with the ECM. If they are in fact the same sensors, then it is more likely there is a bad connection somewhere or the VSS is bad

Here is an idea. Why not look up the speed sensor for the vehicle that the donor engine came from (on an autoparts website – or call) then look up the speed sensor for your car. See if they are the same part number. It’s worth a shot. If they are not, maybe try getting the speed sensor for the other car and trying it. Or maybe run the idea by a performance (tuner) shop in your area and see what they say.

If they are the same part number, like I said before the speed sensor may be bad or bad connection somewhere

depending on manufacturer. ECM engine control management.
some call it ECU engine control unit or as you suggested
ECM engine control module. Some call it a PCM. gets tricky. 🙂

The two parts look the same. I’m fairly sure that the ITR sensor will work but I just wanted to make sure before I buy one. Unfortunately, the two parts numbers don’t match up but, some websites have suggested that the two are in fact interchangeable. There is only one way to find out for sure. Luckily I work in the body shop at a Honda dealership so I get a discount on parts. Thanks guys.

Replaced the speed sensor. I went with the part for the B16 transmission and the speedometer works fine now. Also, the vtec has begun to function properly again. So if anyone out there is running a mix matched motor and transmission combination then use the speed sensor that goes with the transmission, not the motor. At least that is is how it is if you are talking about B series Honda. Thanks for the help guys, Car runs like a champ now.
