I have a 2003 cadillac deville with the northstar engine. I pulled the #5 plug to check for compression which was good, but now i have an even bigger problem. Whenever i try to insert and tighten a spark plug, it bends the electrode and breaks the ceramic off. It seems that the threads are fine, but the hole the electrode fits in is dramatically less tight. I pulled another spark plug and i am able to easily stick a screwdriver into the plug hole. However, #5 shows a lot more resistance, but with some effort it will go through. What can i do to fix this? As i stated the threads seem fine, but the hole for the electrode seems to have gotten smaller. The engine was relatively warm when i removed the plugs. The first image is of #5 ( the bad) and the second one is a known good spark plug hole.

That is the bottom part of the compression tester still in the spark plug hole. Compression testers have two sizes for different spark plug holes. You are using the larger one that came undone from the smaller one.

beerman0001, you hit it on the head! After calming down last night while looking at the pictures, it dawned on me that this was the problem. Any ideas as to how to go about removing this fitting?ez out? Do you think a socket will have. Enough room to turn the fitting back out?

Thin wall socket might. I’d personally use a pair of long nose pliers. That or you could thread the compression tester back into it and see if it can bite enough to spin it out.

Socket will be your best bet. It will be kind of tight after you tried to put the spark plug in.

If the outside diameter of the socket is a problem you might try a 6 point socket. Sometimes these have a smaller O.D. Also wall thickness varies from different brands. The brands using higher quality steel might have a smaller o.d.

Yep, that’s the compression tester. Happens to me all the time. I don’t have a socket that will get it though so I end up using a long pair of needle nose as many have suggested.
