That is a good topic and thanks for bringing it up. I have one word for you, tires. I can’t stress enough how that is probably the #1 thing you can do to quiet a car down is a set of quality tires. It will also help with fuel economy, braking, handling, and performance. You really can’t make an investment on any vehicle with more impact and that’s why I often say the most important part of any vehicle is the tires.

I have a real problem with road noise. I have done two vehicles and reduced the road noise but installing a product called U Seal. Used as a roofing patch sold at home depot. I did the hood, roof, floor and doors. The doors made a huge difference. Go on line and check out sound deadening on cars.

One thing to watch out for with sound deadening material is weight. The heavier the material, the more weight you’ll add to the vehicle. This will compromise performance and fuel economy. Therefore I would recommend starting with a good set of tires. It really does make the biggest difference when it comes to road noise. They can also improve fuel economy as well as handling and braking.

Eric, what do you look for in a set of tires that makes them quiet?

My 2011 Versa is on the stockers right now, and for me, it’s pretty loud. I’m in hearing aids anyway (and don’t wear them unless I want to unintentionally pick up the firing spark in the engine compartment), and the road noise is sufficient to make my passengers have to raise their voices for me to hear properly.

Do you have any suggestions for what to look for, and what makes one tire better than another in terms of quiet?

                  Cheers,

                  -Hinoki

It’s not likely I will. As I pointed out above the easiest way to eliminate noise is with a good set of tires. You’d be amazed at the difference it makes.

If the opportunity comes up I’ll consider it however.
