Hi Eric, I have a 2001 Nissan Frontier 3.3 and I had a new timing belt put in and changed transmission fluid. For one day my truck ran great on the way home from work and the next day it ran great for about 20 minutes and then just stopped running. Had it towed and replaced fuel pump and fuel float gadget in gas tank and now it starts but sputters, shakes and stalls. Check the oil dipstick and drained the oil, no water. Check the oil filler neck and thick oil present like lard.

I’m thinking someone from work may have put something in the gas tank trying to get me fired and it worked, I was fired two days ago due to not being able to drive to work and a thousand dollars later on repairs and still no change. Perhaps a blown head gasket from something put in gas tank?

      Thank you,

      Wendy

Most common gas tank additive to ruin your engine was confectioner’s sugar in the day
But that would in many cases, seize your motor.

If someone did put something in your fuel.. it could possibly be anything, soap, bleach, antifreeze etc.
Sorry to hear it cost you your job, but remember Karma’s a Bit#h

Sorry to hear about that but, sounds about right, I had the same thing happen to me when I had a 1995 jeep cherokee. Still to this day don’t know who did it, but had to drop the fuel tank and replace the fuel pump and filter, found sugar, water and what appeared to be coffee grounds in it. It would idle terribly inconsistent sputter hard and occasionally stall even after flushing it out. But on the plus side id take that as a sign I would not want to work anywhere near a sociopath that would do that for because they don’t like their coworker, the blown head gasket I doubt though unless whatever was put in ate away the gasket, you likely still have whatever it is in the system, it took me two flushes, about 3 replaced injector and a few months to before it ran normal again, even than it would still sometimes have a inconsistent idle like something would clog the injectors from time to time

That sucks big time. I hope the karma train runs over whoever did this.

How is the fuel filter? It may be clogged with stuff from the criminal activity. I know it a pain to drop a tank, but you might need to do that to see what is inside and remedy the situation.

We dropped the fuel tank and replaced fuel pump and fuel sending unit. This made it start again but sputters and stalls. Truck has a very bad erratic rpm and then it stalls. The fuel filter had dark brown gas and black specks of dirt come out. We drained the fuel tank and the gas had a funny odor. Could be ethanol smell, i’m not sure, but the smell was stronger than ever.

Right now we are cleaning the rocker arms, lifters and spark plugs. Because of backfiring and running rich, the rocker arms and especially the spark plugs have black soot on them. . .

If something was added to your fuel…
You might consider flushing everything up to the fuel injectors.
PITA, I understand but if there is contaminates in the fuel system, surely they have made their way to the injectors.
May have also fouled the injectors.
You state the plugs are soot covered (rich condition) it may be the injectors are (partially) stuck open.

Good you’ve done the rocker arms and lifters, I heard a story about the rockers one by one, oil stopped coming out. Had not though about the injectors.

filthy thing for anyone to have done. Best of everything with this problem. Keep us in the loop, like to be able to follow this story.

Unhappily sugars are soluble in petrol and won’t be stopped by the filter. That might mean that the first place it stops [ as residue] in in the cylinders.

You might be able to file an insurance claim to cover the repair costs depending on the type of insurance policy that you have. If some type of contaminant was put in the fuel tank you will have to drain and flush out the entire system from the tank all the way to the fuel injectors and the return fuel line. They sell special cleaning products for that situation. Cleaning out the injectors can be very tricky and it frequently doesn’t work. You can pull off the fuel rail and see how well the injectors are actually spraying fuel.
I would be more worried about the engine oil contamination. Did you examine the oil to see if anything gritty was poured in? That could plug up the oil passages and cause serious damage. You might need to remove the valve cover and the oil pan and flush out everything that you can. Sorry to hear about you trouble, good luck. PS Lock up your truck from now on.
