      I have a 1999 Ford Ranger with a 2.5 l engine. After starting the motor, it will idle rough and acts like it wants to stall. I have replaced the spark plugs which were due and replaced the idle air control valve also. This will make is rev up and sputter and then rev again and sputter. Still does not idle smooth.

        Going upon my experience with fords (at least European fords!) a rough idle will be down to one of the following;

        Spark plugs
        HT Leads
        Coilpack
        Idle air control valve
        MAP sensor (if applicable)
        MAF sensor (if applicable (also known to cause a “popping” sound in the air box when faulty))
        Or an air leak.

        There is one other thing i would suggest but this is whether or not it applies on your vehicle or not, but the power steering pressure switch causes a “up and down” idle usually because the wires frey.

        I know i’ve mentioned a few things you have already tried, but i thought mentioning everything would help anyone else who has the same problem and finds this thread.

        I hope one of the above solves your problems!

          Will check them out. Also I was wondering if a dirty EGR valve might be causing this also?

              It’s not likely to be the EGR unless it’s stuck open. That said I’d recommend you check for vacuum leaks as that is a common cause of a problem like the one you describe. Also be sure to check for air leaks in the tube that runs from the MAF sensor to the engine. Any leaks here can cause all kinds of performance issues.
