Hi all i got a ford v6 2.8 with a automatic transmission called a jatco jf506e 5 speed in which the 2nd and 4th gear duty stop solenoid is suspected as faulty but how do i test a pulse width modulated solenoid ? any info would be great my local garage want £450 to change one solenoid witch costs £40 to buy and a couple of hours to change in which no special tools are needed or the removal of the auto transmission ?
so the main question is i got 9 solenoids in my auto transmission in which 6 of them are simple yes/no solenoids and 3 of them are pulse width modulated solenoids and i want to test them all ?
      thanks for reading :silly:

All solenoids share in common their coil resistance and isolation from ground. Pulse with modulation simply means the magnetic pressure created by the coil on the armature is controlled in an incremental way. The Pulse Width Modulation has at its limits fully off and fully on. I suspect a solenoid failure would mean that it either won’t move mechanically or the coil is bad, or both. Applying a PWM signal should not be necessary for functional testing.

Start with a wiring diagram and check each circuit for coil resistance and isolation from ground.

If you feel these solenoids are the problem.
There is a kit for all nine.replace them all.
to test the solenoids ohm them out.The pulse/
modulated one just means either they are turned
off and on rapidly (pulsed) I would compare the
new solenoids resistance to the old.

thankyou for your input just needed to know that if i put 12 volts though all solenoids i will not blow them up or get false readings :cheer: also i would change all 9 solenoids but the cost is either £50 for 1 solenoid or £400 for all 9 ummmmmmmmmmm 1 will do for now

Honestly I don’t think those solenoids are duty cycled. Transmission solenoids are often an ON or OFF proposition. Duty cycled solenoids are pulse width modulated like fuel injectors. That means they get an electrical signal turning them off and on very rapidly. Transmission diagnosis often requires special tools such as pressure testing equipment. Not performing the proper tests can waste your time and money. To find out what tests should be performed you should consult the service manual. The factory service manual will have all the testing outlined including how to verify and test the operation of the solenoids.
