Hey everyone,
I made a lengthy (almost 50min!) response video to Eric’s soldering guide. I go through pretty much everything that happens in his video to answer potential questions and fix as much misinformation as I can. Its less of a stand-alone tutorial and more of a response video so I didn’t cover everything I could.
Liked it, but if I may, bit nit-picky on certain points. Valid if you’re doing actual electrical engineering work where absolute check-box precision/procedures need following. Things like butane lighter for heat-shrink tubing? Really? Bit of experience, it should never be an issue, and saves loads of time. Outside of my old job, now as a hobbyist I’ve used my heat gun one time for this, as it’s usually quite difficult after doing this with a lighter a few times to screw it up.
Main point IMO that needs following for most, use only what heat you need as general rule, not only oxidation, but when doing this for a board or the like you will end up lifting solder pads, and causing various other problems..
So I do thank you for a seen response I can watch with must have tips, especially at the end; still a great response vid man. 😉
Thanks for the feedback! And you can be much more nit-picky. I’ve watched a few multipart videos on soldering to NASA standards. Now THAT is nit-picky!
With the lighter, its a perfectly valid way to do it, so long as you’re aware that its not to spec and could potentially cause issues. But do note the video isn’t just for Eric but also for my regular viewers who might be interested in seeing these things.
Excellent video. You articulated your points very well and I fully agree with your points. I found your youtube channel I watched a few videos and am intrigued as I received my EE degree before computers were a house hold item and this is where I am trying to fill in the gaps, especially with GPIB control.

Why thank you! Hearing that someone is enjoying my work makes it all worth it. Well, if I could make enough money from it to afford a car that’d be pretty cool too 😛

Careful, it’s addictive. Hearing that someone enjoys your work that is.
As for making a living at it. I can say it is a great occupation. You get to meet a lot of great people, and they teach you new things. Thank you BTW for your video and for your contribution to the forum. It does take time to develop a channel however. That and a LOT of work. Once you’re on the other side of it, it’s awesome. Personally, I’m hoping this is the last job I ever have.
