OK, so I feel like the guy standing out in the car repair field, holding a bag waiting for the elusive snipe to show up so I can capture it and claim the prize. I guess a fair bit of ignorance on my part is to be expected when one wanders into a new area?
Final act of my Heater Core Replacement project on the 1994 Ford Taurus GL, 3.0L V6, OHV, Non-Flex Fuel, Engine Code U was to replace the hoses, since most were old, bloated and a few were leaking.
In scoping out the project I posted about some factory crimped on hose clamps and asked how to deal with them….
Consensus seemed to be that one needed to replace the whole thing – the metal pipe and the rubber hose. [Appreciate the kind help and views] So at vast expense, I tracked down one of these OEM Motorcraft metal pipes, the rubber hoses and a set of Motorcraft OE worm-gear style hose clamps to replace the spring clip clamps. Wasn’t looking forward to buying a whole set of metal pipes since one pipe was as costly as all of the rest of the hoses combined! So I installed one leg as all new.
But then I had an idea…. wonder what would happen if the factory clamp was cut off? Could the metal pipes be reused or was this manufactured as a unit that didn’t allow replacement? So I decided to experiment with the old one…..
Got the old hose and pipe out of the car and on the bench.
Stuck it into the vise and attacked it with the Dremel!
Cut through the clamp and lightly down into the old hose.
Applied some pry action with a screw driver….
And clamp yielded!
Pulled old hose off…..
Cleaned up the end and it looked like the new one – ready to live again!
So I did the rest of these “permanent clamps” this way and saved buying a whole bunch of expensive metal tubes.
er, anyone wanna buy a “slightly used” tube?
Learning here as I go……

reporting from Snipe Central….edit…er, hope my dry humour translates through the staid media of a posting? I am grateful for all of the help I have gotten on these forums! Have to laugh at myself when I miss obvious things!
