They’re loud because to make the power they do they must have airflow. Just like a drag racer is louder than a daily driver. Mac and Matco don’t make their own impacts, they just rebadge Ingersoll guns with their name. Some models are a little quieter but I have seen a lot of people go through plenty of IR guns in the shop and my Snapn IM 6100 is still spanking them all day. I bought it very well used in 2005 so if it can live through that its a hell of a gun. I’d use a SnapOn gun and get a box of disposable earplugs myself.
OK, I finally broke down and got one! The snapon guy told one of the other techs I got one and now everyone wants to see it in action. I, however, took it home to use. I have a mediocre one to use at work that is doing the job just fine. I still need to find some time to use it. I’ll be removing an automatic transmission on a Ranger soon and maybe will be able to try it out then.
