Are SnapOn tools really worth it? I turn the wrench a good bit, and have had wrenches fail and even literally explode. I have had the same set of craftsman sockets (give or take ) for the last 10 years, but I usually have to replace my socket wrenches at least every 3 years or so. Looking online, SnapOn sells a 3/8 drive wrench, just a 3/8 wrench, just the MANUAL wrench, no extras, it doesn’t play music get wifi or have a tv on it, for $78!!! What could possibly justify charging that much for a wrench? Even if I bought a WalMart wrench for $5 every year it would take 15 years to equal the SnapOn.

I really like SnapOn. Expensive, but nice to have in your toolbox. I also have some SK, Cornwell, and Craftsman. I think it boils down to personal choice. All seem to have the same lifetime guarantee.
I just love the way they fit the fastener, the way it feels in my hand, the shining promise of success I see every time I open my tool chest….. ooops. gotta’ go.:cheer:

I would have to say that if you work at a shop go with who is the best tool guy to you becuse you will have to deal with him for a while. Crafstman make some real good stuff, but the higher end tools are my choice. (I chose Matco because he was the best to me, also they gave me a sweet deal when I got into school.) If you are a DIY, Craftsman is for you.

Correction, Craftsman used to make good stuff. it now uses imported steel with made in U.S.A label, manufactured by other 3rd party vendors – it really cheapen the Made in USA products. Frankly, I had better results with made in Taiwan tools than Craftsman.

I don’t work on cars full time, but if I did, I would either go with Matco or Snap-on. In car repair business, broken tool = loss of time and money. So In long run, good tools will pay for itself.

I know this is old but i am a home diy guy.. i can appreciate both harbor freight and snap on.

like the previous guy put buying anything by the piece is gonna be a TON compared to a nice starter set of any brand. another thing i didnt see brought up is these guys are hustling in a shop there not going to want to leave work and drive to the mall to warranty a craftsman item when their tool guy comes right to the door to do it for them.

Some things i believe a home guy can use a cheaper version…some not one of my favorite tools is this and imho It is the BEST made item in this category

ANother one that i couldnt beleive how expensive it was(not snappy) but was like
night and day compared to anything else ive ever used was my knipex needle nose

Also with some air tools and “master sets” ie bearing kits 4wd service kits etc the tool truck brands are sometimes rebadged items that are significantly more expensive,
you can check this thread if your looking at buying first and see the equivelants.

I have quite a few snap on tools, but have to agree, over priced as all hell. I won’t use a ratchet that isn’t a snap on, knowing I can pull for all I am worth without having to worry that the gears are gonna strip out and break my knuckles is great. I have tried quite a variety, craftsman, matco, SK, atd, kd, blah blah blah, thier ratchets are worth it. As far as normal, no moving part tools, wrenches, screw drivers, and the like, craftsman, has been just wonderful to me. But I have a 5 gallon pail full of craftsman ratches and I have decided to just get them replaced for free and give them away as gifts. Almost every scar on my hands is from a craftsman ratchet letting go and me paying the price.

As far as air tools, I really see snap ons failings here. The best impacts I have found were I/R’s. Worked just as well and weren’t as loud.

+1 on Knipex, they are the Rolls-Royce of plier manufacturers, insanely expensive but worth every penny.

But you always have the personal sense of accomplishment knowing that you are doing well enough for yourself financially that you can afford that $200 ratchet!

It’s no different than anything else in life. People are in debt to buy that fancy car, big house, etc.

The way I look at it is – if a guy is making a good living spinning wrenches, and that’s what he loves doing, he will be using those tools 8-10 hours a day so why not have the best? Now, if we are talking about a lube tech making $9/hr with $10k debt for tools…that’s a different story.
