Hi all, I have a 1996 Mercury Villager Van 3.0L 6 cylinders and it has about 140K miles. The smoke coming out of exhaust pipe are white and smell kinda sweet/gassy because the lower intake manifold gasket was broken and coolant got into intake valve. So I change the upper and lower intake manifold gaskets and now the smoke still white but smell like something got burned.

I wonder if my head gaskets were bad also because I didn’t replace them at the time. Any comment/suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

sounds like the gaskets that got done are
still leaking or you have a head gasket issue.
is your coolant going low or does the oil look milky?
If you start the car can any bubbling be seen in the radiator?

I also just change the coolant because it got leak at heater control valve when I turn the heat on, but not leak when I turn off the heat. I didn’t go for a long ride to test it but the smoke is like white cloud and kinda thick. No bubbling seen when I start the car.

usually thick white smoke is steam from coolant.
is your coolant going low? can you smell coolant
at the exhaust? You could have a head gasket issue
            or a cracked head?

you may need to drive it longer to get what mite be left in there after the work was done. if that is not the issue i would go with what college man stated.

Yea it could be as simple as residual stuff left over in the exhaust, I would drive it around for a while longer before you condemn it it might just go away on it’s own. If however you do suspect a head gasket issue this video shows how to test for that.

Thanks all, I just left it idle for about 15 minutes and white smoke reduce significantly. So I guess my head gasket still fine then. Thanks all for your inputs. S:)

that is great. i would however keep driving it to make sure it all goes away. if not watch Erics video to check head gasket. also keep an eye on the water.
