If you can, pull the valve cover, but as mentioned, a boroscope will be very helpful if you get denied for lifting the valve cover. Beware as well if the boroscope is black and white displayed, it may be difficult to see sludge, let alone manuever the scope where it needs to go.

The oil fill hole on yotas have a baffel plate keeping you from seeing straight down in the valve cover.
you could try a small inspection mirror and flash light to look in the oil fill.
also look at the cap and the dip stick.even if someone cleaned off the
sludge you will still see the sludge stain. You could also try a white
paper towel and wipe under the the oil fill hole and see what comes
out. The best way is to pull the valve cover as suggested. also smell
the oil for burnt.I actually did a video about this.
