I how should I charge for side work? Like say an oil change or a simple brake job?

        • charge enough to cover the cost of supplies
        • charge enough to put money in your pocket (labor, tools, experience)
        • charge less than the local competition.

I’ve know experienced mechanics that charge 50 and hour, and even up to 75 an hour. Personally, since i only have about 2 years under my belt as a tech, and I dont even do much side work, i only charge 25 hour. but i really only work for people i know. But that’s just what I charge, most will say thats too low.

If you just started and wanna make new customers charge just below other shops or as much as cheapest one. Tell everyone you have promotion going on now and introductory rates. If you work for peanuts you’ll get the worst customers, old, beaten cars and a whole lot of complaints. You’ll find yourself liable for all the problems that happen on their cars just because you was the last (and only one 😉 ) who worked on them. It’ll take you years to get rid of all the morons who coming to you just because you are used to be cheap, even if now you are good and value yourself.
Trust me, it is real life experience talking here.
