Hi Eric. I’m a new fan of yours, having watched your various videos, including How To Find Suspension Noises. Currently I’m dealing with a ’03 Freelander that judders and vibrates at cornering, both left and right turns. Noise is most audible at rear nearside. CV ball joints has been newly replaced. Just wondering if we can narrow this down to a steering rack, steering pump or even possible transfer case issue. Any help appreciated.

I’m wondering if the vehicle has LSD and if it has then are you using OEM gear oil?

          Hey Barneyb,

It has rear diffs, but I can’t say for sure if OEM gear oil was used or not. I don’t know much about the history of this car as it’s not mine but I am trying to get to the bottom of the shuddering, grinding noise when turning.

By LSD I mean limited slip differential. An open differential will send all the motion to the wheel with no traction. A limited slip differential tries to lock the two axles together while allowing enough slip for cornering. There are various designs of LSD’s and some require special oil. Using the wrong oil in these can result in the symptoms you describe.

So, I suggest finding out if it has an LSD and if so is it of a type that requires special oil.

              Hi again,

It has standard rear diffs, no LSD.

I know what you mean, Barnyb, about using LSD-ONLY oil for LSD. But the symptoms you attribute to wrong oil in the LSD would normally happen at full lock, which isn’t the case with this LRover with standard traction. The shuddering occurs especially when turning, and I failed to add earlier, at a slight incline. The weight transfer seems to unsettle it.

                  BlipThrottle:

Just a shot in the dark here, but have you recently replaced the tires? I once had symptoms like this in a car where new tires were put on, but they were wider than the stock tires — the edges of the tires were rubbing on the edges of the inner fender-well when I made turns, causing a vibrating/shuddering just like you’re describing.

Just my $0.02 worth — it’s most likely something else, but if you have had the wheels and/or tires replaced recently, check their size and make sure they’re exactly the stock size.

                  Best of luck to you.

                    Hi LMacNeill,

Funny you should mention tires as the owner did bust both his near side tires when he hit the curve of a median strip a while back, but the shuddering noise had already been detected long before this happened. The good front tire got placed in the rear and two new tires fitted to the front, all of same width.

if it just busted the tire and they replaced it the rims could be bent

                        Hi Yavion,

The shuddering noise was around before the tires got busted, but yes the same rims used.

Since there may be damage to the suspension, you might want to have the alignment checked. Also, check the inner fender liners. Sometimes they come loose and make contact with the tires. This is pretty easy to spot with a good visual inspection. In addition to the video you mentioned, I have written an article on noise diagnosis you might find helpful.
