Hey guys. I did a repair a little while ago and I’ve had some electrical problems since. I’m wondering if a misplaced line could be the problem.

The line coming off my negative battery terminal is grounded visibly to the chassis of the car. This was not touched. There is another line with the same black and yellow markings that I had to disconnect during the repair, and when putting the thing back together the best I could figure is that it served to ground to the engine on the top of the transmission housing (I was a little fuzzy on this, I didn’t really remember where it went…). Every wiring diagram I’ve seen seems to indicate that the negative is just grounded and doesn’t go anywhere else.

It seemed strange to me that there would be two grounds like this, and I’ve been wondering ever since if maybe that line was supposed to go somewhere else. I don’t have a lot of experience with cars and I’d love to just ask someone who’s seen a lot of engines if it’s pretty normal to have two grounds, one to the chassis and one to the engine block.

      Some additional details
The problems I experienced were dead batteries after driving the car for a while, as if the electricals were running off the battery and not the alternator. I replaced the battery. Still having problems. I replaced the alternator, the guy at autozone said it was shot. Still having problems. I’ve also had a problem where the car will just shut off when I put a lot of electrical drain on, ac and headlights and radio. That was pretty concerning, as it first happened while driving.
When I run the car when the electricals off, a voltmeter shows the battery charging. When I turn the electricals on, it shows the battery start to drain pretty quickly.

Yes, you’re engine/trans must be connected to battery negative as well.

        edit –

Grounding is a terrible term. We’re tying components to the same potential, that is all.

Suspect battery issue is because alternator isn’t ‘grounded’ to the frame and in turn, battery negative.
