Hey guys! I have a question. My battery went to crap so i took my 97 s10 in for a new one to be swapped in. When I got my truck back from the shop, I noticed a new light on my dash. Looked similar to the high beams icon. Didn’t think much of it at first but I found out that my head lights and high beams do not work at all. I swapped similar relays around and still nothing. Btw… They are HID that are fairly new. Only like half a year old. My question for you all is what do you think went wrong while at the shop???

Not much to go on there mate lol. Gotta do some electrical testing to see what the heck is going on.

Is the new indicator light for the daytime running lights? There might be some conflict or disable feature with the HID kit.

🙂 Sometimes strange things happen when you have an electrical problem. There could have been some type of voltage spike when the new battery was installed or before it was installed. I hate to say it, but most aftermarket HID light sets are not very durable for problems like you were having. A bad battery may make the alternator over charge to compensate for what the computer sees as a problem with a constant 12 volts from the battery. Now everything should be back to normal, but some damage may have been done to your HID system. As was mentioned you may want to unplug your HID light relay from the wiring and see if the problem still occurs. If it does, then more detective work will be needed into the problem, if the light goes off from the dash and everything works after unplugging the HID, then you may have had an accidental problem with the HID ballasts. Let us know what you find when you unplug the HID’s. Good Luck.

I’ve never seen this light before. Its lit up when the normal headlights are off.. high beams don’t work. One of the park lights is out. Only lights that do work are the park and blinkers. Other than that, nothing comes on. 🙁

The HID lights I had installed by a shop that specifically does them. And they haven’t given me a problem since I got them about 6 months ago or so.

can you post a picture of the light?

HID’s don’t like voltage fluctuations as pointed out. They also really don’t like voltage spikes. There may have been a voltage spike or something like that when they changed the battery, especially if they left the engine running when they changed the battery.

As for the light on the dash, it may have something to do with the DRL’s if you have them. The HID’s would be hooked up to that circuit. If there’s a problem with the HID’s it could make that light come on. Here’s a video on how to diagnose HID’s.

You can also find more information on electrical diagnosis here.

Should be the daytime running lamp light indicator.

On Chevys you can push the dome override button 4 times in a row to deactivate the DRL module (this only works until you turn the key off) that might tell you if the DRL module is causing your problem.

Thanks everyone for all the help and suggestions. Checked all the plugs and wire voltages. The shop that installed the battery knocked some stuff loose. Luckily that was all. :cheer: 🙂

Good find. Thanks for the update. If you have a problem after you or someone else does work, it’s always a good idea to go back and check that work.

Thanks for using the ETCG forum.
