I have a 1988 Dodge Dakota 3.9 V6, and whenever I shift into drive from park in makes a large clunk. I have to go to a complete stop before I can even shift (which is what you should do anyways). Any suggestions on what the problem could be?

I would check the u-joints to start with. However depending on what rear axle you have, the diff in those are known for clunking. My 89 D150 had that same clunk too.

If you do trace the noise to be at the diff, i would start by taking the diff cover off and checking the integrity of the gears then refill with the correct diff fluid.

Checking for backlash too wouldn’t be a bad idea if you had the tools too S:)

Thank you dreamer, I have replaced the U-Joints not too long ago, so I will definently look into the differential; plus the fluid is in need of some care, so I will change that as well.

Yea if you receintly replaced the U joints then I would also recommend looking to the diff however if it’s loose enough a fluid change won’t help you will need to adjust the backlash of the gears if they are still any good. This can be a tricky procedure and I hope to make a video on it someday but if you do find a problem back there you might consider bringing in a professional. Probably the easiest way I can think to check it is to chalk the wheels and put it in nuetral, go under the truck and try to rotate the drive shaft in both directions, if you feel the ‘clunk’ in the diff you know that the issue is probably in there.
