I have a 1997 Mercury Villager which is a Nissan Quest. It is staying in first gear too long and shifts when I release the accelerator. When I accelerate at highway speed it shifts down aggressively instead of pulling as normal. It always was a coaster when decelerating and I usually took the overdrive off when coming to a stop. Now it feels like it is in a lower gear and engine is slowing me down.

No codes have been thrown. I checked fluid level. It is good. We have packrats here in the desert and inspected for wire damage. None found. Van has 123,000 miles.

If you don’t find any codes, your fluid level is correct, and you didn’t find any issues with the wiring, then it’s possible you need to rebuild or replace the transmission. If it comes to that, I’d recommend a replacement over a rebuild. I cover transmission issues like this in detail in this article I wrote.

Good luck and keep us posted.
