My wife owns a 2003 Honda Accord EX 2.4 Ltr engine. Whenever the car is idling, it shakes like crazy. I’ve replaced the spark plugs but the car still shakes. The only time it doesn’t shake is when the car is moving or when it is put into neutral while it is idling. Any suggests as to what the problem may be?

This is somewhat contradictory and confusing. Could you please explain more clearly?

They meant to say it shakes while idling in gear. I know the problem well, and nobody ever fixes it.

It boils down to being engine mounts being worn out as a group and/or adjustment of the powertrain’s position on the mounts. Some cars have specs for adjusting that and some don’t. It’s only a thing with 4 cylinders too. Basically to address it, all engine/trans mounts need to be replaced (not cheap to begin with) in a conscientious manner while taking care to make sure everything is adjusted properly. It’s a tough thing to get done right by a mechanic because taking the time to ‘make sure it’s done perfectly’ is not part of a flat rate labor guide.

It costs extra money to get a shop to take the time to put all the mounts in, drive it, bring it back in the shop, loosen the mounts, re-adjust them, test drive again, and repeat as necessary. People generally don’t want to pay for that because it’s not a real problem. It’s what’s referred to as a “nuisance problem”. It can be detected and described as an undesirable characteristic for the car to have, but it’s not really causing any damage or inability to use the car as needed.

It has to be fixed if there is severe vibration. vibration will break other parts like hoses and tubes and gaskets…etc, etc.
