Today I went to Toyota motors to get this problem checked my corolla 12v 2e engine was making this severe tick tick noise. I thought the tappet adjustment was out so I talked with the guy over there he opened up the bonnet and said sir this is not just a tappet problem its a valve problem we will need to open up the head to find out just what the problem really is and then we will know how much money you are to be charged. I got scared after hearing that and came back home without getting anything done.
The guy was right the engine really does need overhauling but how much does a valve job cost? or what should I do?

As with a doctor, you can always get a second opinion.

What they should do is remove the valve cover gasket and check the clearances between the cams and the lifters.

To do this yourself ensure the engine is cold and set it at at top dead center at #1 cylinder.

Check the the intake and exhaust lifters with lobes not engaged with the lifters using a feeler gage.

The I believe the intake should be .15-.25 mm and exhaust .25-.35 mm, but double check these. These clearances may be on a sticker in the underhood (bonnet) area….

Then rotate the engine 180 degrees and to check the remaining cams/lifters.

If you have excessive space you have to remove the camshaft and and add shims (I think you have shims, or hopefully there may be an adjustment nut/screw…)

        Good luck…

The underhood sticker says to set it while its hot at .20mm intake and .20mm exhaust(I’ve double checked this with the haynes manual as well). How much hot are we talking about here? Arent tappets normally adjusted when the engine is cold?

Do what the sticker says… If it says hot, check them hot…. This is determined by the engineers/manufacturers that design the engine… some are checked hot, some are checked cold….

Hot means the engine should have reached operating temperature.

Well the best I can do is check if they are at .20mm. I’ll repost the result when I’m done.

That will do… That will save you an hour or so of labor time in a shop and let you know if further work is truly necessary.

Without hearing the noise we can’t verify what Toyota suggested but I suspect a worn camshaft if the noise is valve related. Only you know how much money you can afford or want to spend and not knowing the year and condition of the car it’s hard to say how much is too much.
