      Hi everyone,

I want to set the timing on my 1986 chevy g10 van with a 4.3 v6 262 engine. The timing sticker says 0 degrees btdc @ 500 (dr).

This confused me, does this mean to set the timing at 0 while the vehicle is in drive? I must be reading the label wrong.

I put a picture of the label up http://i.imgur.com/qC1S9Yg.jpg

Does anyone have experience setting ignition timing like this?

It does indeed looks like you need to set while in drive. To me that means drop it in drive make sure the rpm is at 500rpm set to 0deg and I’m good to go.
I would wait for someone more knowledgeable to reply I’ve never heard of setting ignition timing in with ‘box in drive. normally its with vacuum advance and without advance at a set RPM on cars in my neck of the woods.

You need to unplug the black and tan wire off the ecm usually somewhere under or around the glove box then check / set your timing and plug it back in and you will be good to go

Disregard my last post I misread your vehicle year as 1996

Right, the manual says to plug the vacuum advance. I could change the idle on the carb to 500 easily and set the timing afterwards, I just don’t understand the point of doing it while in gear.

ha gmule.. the “glovebox” came off along with the center dash cover and is sitting in the back of the van.

just putting this out there for anyone, I put it in drive, blocked the wheels and put the e-brake on and timed it to 0 btdc and success. it’s still a little sputtery but I think that may have to do with a carburetor setting. I’ll see how it is in the near future
