When changing oil the debate has been on forever as to which top name brand is better? Really though is AMSOIL better than Royal Purple are these brands better than even Castrol, Mobil 1, or serperate brands? Just curious because at one time oil was really just oil it all did the same thing. Now you have oils with so called unique or different additives that are supposed to be more specialized than the next guy’s oil.

This is one subject you will NEVER find the masses coming to a consensous. As long as you change your oil on schedule and use the correct weight oil your manual calls for, I really don’t think it matters which brand of oil you use. However, I do use a synthetic oil because I live in a cold weather state and i do notice that the engine turns over and starts quicker with synth compared to conv oil.

My personal favourite is Mobil 1, wouldn’t doubt Royal Purple and Amsoil by any means though.

Mobil 1 is mine. However, a good website to check out for oil recommendations as well as UOA and so forth is is http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=cfrm

I use mobile1 in my own vehicles also.
Customers normally like the cheapest stuff though.T-(

Penzoil Ultra and Pennzoil Platinum synthetics are getting a lot of love at that web site and it is available at Wally World. I picked up a jug and will be trying the Ultra out this weekend on my 08 Civic. Up until now have been using M1.

I use the Pennzoil Platinum sometimes too.
                  Seems like a good oil.

I’ve use SuperTech 5w20 for my last oil change, before that I used Motorcraft 5W20 Semi-Synthetic.

That was for my Jeep. It’s asked 3 times for an oil change, but I’ve changed it twice. I left the Semi-Synthetic in until it asked me the second time. I guess I should have changed it sooner but I got tired of the constant dinging and also “Change Oil” was covering my trip-odometer. I cleared it thinking I’d get around to it and before I knew it, it asked again.

If decent oil weren’t 2x as expensive as no-name oil I might start using it more often.

i just use regular castro 5w-30. I like the synthetics, but they are just way too expensive. Unless someone here can justify the price.

A hacksaw and some scrap black iron pipe will tell you at least something about wear protection. I was going to cut some pipe to length but did not have any cutting fluid, so I thought I would use motor oil. I couldn’t get through the pipe with the saw until I wiped off the oil. I was very surprised!

HAHA thats a good way to test oil!

You’re going to get a lot of different opinions on this for sure. As for synthetics I don’t recommend putting it in high mileage engines that haven’t run synthetic, what seems to happen is that every seal will start to leak and it will either start burning oil or you might even start to develop engine noises, I believe this is due to the different flow charastics of synthetics. In short it’s not worth the money on a high mileage engine that hasn’t seen synthetic before. I personally don’t use synthetic but rather the cheepest regular oil I can find with the most current API rating and change it and the filter every 4K, I’ve been doing this for years and have never experienced a problem or seen excess deposits on engine internals from doing this, think about it, if the engine wasn’t designed to run on special oil it’s really not needed, the important thing in my book is to make sure it’s the correct viscosity for the engine and that it’s clean. I would however run a ‘formulated’ oil in an engine that I had built myself or one that required special oil, in short on something that would benefit from it, a daily driver after all is just that.
