I just had my cars transmission serviced , it got me thinking that most of us change the oil in the engine of our cars , but I’d bet that there are a few who omit to do the gearbox / transmission , it just as important , on mine it’s not a job I’d attempt myself but it’s still vital to the car

with the new Dextron 6 fluid they say it has a extended fluid change interval… i say bullcrap, i change it every 30,000 miles… people with the 4T65E transmission never change there fluid it seems in these cars, then the fluid has a black color, and then they wonder why it shifts funny… ge… maybe because you never change the fluid!

last time however i didn’t do it myself i gave the local auto shop business, the offered me a flush and i figured i would try it, the car was low mileage at the time and sort of still is, so there is that.

My car has what’s called a sealed for life transmission , :S having said that the service manual recommends service transmission every 45,000 KM , this is what I do , flush , filter and fluid , it’s a GM 5L40-E 5 speed , auto .

yea i am not a fan of the sealed transmissions, its just another way to make it so the customer who owns the vehicle has to be dependent on the dealership in my opinion.

Sealed for life transmissions are where I draw the line. First of nothing is “sealed for life” and it should be serviced regularly. “Life” means the manufacturers predetermined life of the vehicle, which can be from 100,000-200,000 miles for example.
Naturally, this number can vary greatly as individual use, quality control, and make all add variables.
As far as servicing “normal transmissions” I do so regularly both manuals and automatics.
The sealed for life trannies I prefer to leave alone however upon customer request I will service them.
